Beginner Navigation Course 1
The aim of this one-day map reading course in the Peak District is to start you off with navigation and provide you with the fundamentals so that you feel confident walking independently in lowland terrain. You will learn the meanings of different map symbols, where you have the right to walk, and practice relating the map to the ground. We will introduce the compass to measure distances, helping you understand timings. Additionally, you will learn how to locate yourself in an emergency using grid references.

Different Maps and Scales
Most used maps symbols and what they mean (including where we can walk, public rights of way, access land)
Relating the map to the ground
Basic compass work to measure distance and understand timings
How to find yourself on a map using grid references
Basic understanding of contours
The usual timings are 10-4
You can choose from either a private booking or to book a space on our open group event. For group event, we need a minimum booking of 2 people for the event to proceed. In the event that no other participants join, you will be given the option to either receive a full refund or to reschedule for an alternative date.
We have a low instructor to participant ratio (1:4) on our open courses. This is to ensure that we are providing really good quality teaching session and we are able to tailor the day to everyone’s experience and goals.
