Peak District Rock Climbing Courses
Our Rock Climbing Courses in the Peak District are a fantastic way to have an adventure with you family or friends, experience outdoor rock climbing or develop your existing skills to become an independent climber.
We believe in quality and operate on a small instructor to participant ratio. Most of the courses that we run are private (you can book that for anytime we have availability) but we also have some open sessions thoughout the year. We provide all of the equipment. The sessions listed below are a guide -whether you want to learn to lead climb or simply are looking for some fun things to do in the Peak District we always speak to you before the day to make sure that we tailor it exactly to your experience, goals and aspirations. Our Peak District outdoor experience days are easily accessible from Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham, or Derby.

The Peak District stretches over 5 counties and we run our Rock Climbing courses and Abseiling in Derbyshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Cheshire, and Greater Manchester.
The locations that we use for climbing and abseiling also happen to be on the list of best places to visit in the Peak District, they are all that good! Gritstone Edges often have the best views in the Peak District as they sit high on a hillside. Just going for a walk will give you a great day out but combining it with climbing will make it an unforgettable experience. It would be very hard to choose the best location for rock climbing in the Peak District as they are all really good. We tend to choose the venue based on your accommodation, experience, course objectives and the weather.

Without a doubt Stanage Edge is one of the best locations for rock climbing in the Peak District. With stunning views over Hope Valley and hundreds of routes to go at, this is our personal favourite as quite simply, it never fails to deliver. We also try to squeeze in a quick exploration of Robin Hoods Cave at the end of our sessions. We can run every single one of our courses from this venue. If you are looking for one of the best things to do in Derbyshire - with rock climbing at Stanage you can’t go wrong!

Burbage Rocks

Burbage Rocks is a great venue due to a very short walk to get to the climbing area (5 minutes) which also happens to be a great rock climbing location with great views. The routes here are shorter so it is perfect for our Half Day courses as well those days when we want to pack in lots of climbing. We often use Burbage Edge for our Introduction to Climbing Course, Trad Climbing Course and Family Rock Climbing course in the Peak District.

Bamford Edge
Intermediate, Advanced
Arguably Bamford Edge is the most scenic climbing location in the Peak District - it is worth just doing a Bamford Edge Walk to see the stunning views over Win Hill, Ladybower Reservoir and most of the Hope Valley. If you however ever get a chance to go rock climbing at Bamford Edge, it will add yet another layer to your Peak District experience. Group use is not allowed at this venue so we only use this only for our intermediate trad climbing course (Day 4 or 5) or guided climbing with a max ratio of 1:2.

The Roaches

With beautiful rock formations and panoramic views over Hen Cloud, rock climbing at the Roaches offers an unforgettable day out, whether you are a beginner climber or you want to test yourself on some of the trad classics like The Sloth or Valkyrie. This venue has some exciting abseils too so it makes it a fantastic choice for Charity or Stag and Hen adventure experiences in the Peak District. Whether you are new to climbing or an experienced climber, the Roaches should be on your list of places to visit in the Peak District.

Froggatt Edge

This is a great venue for our Peak District Trad Climbing Course. More sheltered than some other gritstone edges this is often a good choice for those days when the weather just does not want to cooperate. The walk to Froggatt Edge is a little longer (15 minutes) but it is worth it as you will be rewarded with some excellent climbs. This venue is home to some classic slab routes so learning climbing technique goes hand in hand with your trad climbing skills. We will often incorporate technique elements into our guided days.

Curbar Edge

Curbar Edge has got a bit of a reputation amongst trad climbers as the place where grades don’t come easily! This is a fantastic climbing venue for intermediate to advanced climbers who already have trad climbing experience and want to test themselves on some of the classic climbs, push their skills and improve head game.

Windgather Rocks

Friendly location that is great for beginner climbers, families as well as if you would like to learn how to lead climb in the Peak District. The walk to Windgather Rocks is short and the atmosphere is friendly so it makes an excellent all round choice. Located on the Derbyshire–Cheshire border, this is one of the most popular gritstone crags in the area.

Harborough Rocks

Harboro Rocks is a fantastic venue for Rock Climbing Family Days as the nature of the limestone crag makes it suitable for younger children. Located close the village of Brassington, this is also home to Harboro Cave- archeologists have discovered settlements dating all the way to the Ice Age! This location is perfect if you are looking for things to do near Bakewell.

Higger Tor

Views over Burbage valley and Carl Wark are a backdrop to our Weaselling session. Higger Tor is a great choice to explore gritstone rock features and hidden caves as there is an abundance of rock features with the highlight being the‘’Iron Cross’’. Located conveniently in close proximity to Burbage Rocks, you can split your full day experience into two separate sessions and experience both locations in one day! Rock Climbing at Higger Tor offers fantastic crack climbing test piece - the File so it makes it a great location for our 5 Day Trad Climbing Course in the Peak District.

Horseshoe Quarry
Beginners, Families, Intermediate, Advanced, Groups
Horseshoe Quarry is our go to venue for Sport Climbing Course in the Peak District. As it is partly owned by the British Mountaineering Council ( BMC) the majority of bolts and anchors have been replaced a few years ago which makes it a good location to spend a day or two learning how to lead climb. This also makes a good venue for any beginner climbing course. Located close to Stoney Middleton, there are several different options for smaller crags, making it a great place to spend a few days exploring sport climbing in the Peak District.

Yes, we will bring everything that you need to be safe - harness, helmet, all of the ropes and or bouldering mat. We will also provide you with climbing shoes. You can climb in sturdy trainers or boots but rock climbing on gritstone is much better with climbing shoes on. During our sessions you will learn technique for climbing on gritstone which includes smearing (using friction) and standing on small footholds which is easier in climbing shoes. If you have your own equipment you are welcome to bring it.

Yes our Peak District adventure activities are dog friendly :) We are happy for you to bring your dog to any private course that you book. Please let us know if you are bringing your four legged friend as some areas have a seasonal restrictions (nesting, lambing etc) and we can choose location with those in mind.

The Peak District is easily accessible from Sheffield and Manchester. In some cases we can help with transportation if we have availability. There are direct trains from Manchester and Sheffield to Hathersage, Bamford or Hope where we can pick you up from and head to one of our locations for the day. If you require a different location please let us know in advance and we will try and help.

Absolutely! Actually the best way to climb is to use your legs as much as possible so don’t worry about upper body strength. We will always adapt the session so if you are coming back from an injury or you have any specific medical or mobility issues, please let us know and we will work with you.

You can book on the website up until 24 hours. If you would like a last minute booking that is within 24 hours we might be able to do it if we have availability, please give us a call and we will be happy to help.
If you have scheduled a session for the following day, we'll reach out to you once we have access to emails. Our work is out at the crag and there may be some gaps between email responses. However, if a time slot is available, and you've reserved the session, it's confirmed, and we'll send you the necessary information as promptly as possible.
