Navigation Course for Families
Learning how to navigate can be a fantastic way for your kids to be involved in your family walks. Understanding the map will allow you all to share responsibility. This is a great way for kids to learn a really useful skill at a young age, all in a fun way! Our family navigation course is a day where you will learn together how to read the map, identify different features, use the compass to measure distance and lots of other useful tips to help you get the most out of your family walks.
What we will cover
Different Maps and Scales
Most used maps symbols and what they mean (including where we can walk, public rights of way, access land)
Relating the map to the ground
Basic compass work to measure distance and understand timings
How to find yourself on a map using grid references
Basic understanding of contours
The usual timings are 10-4
This day closely follows our beginner navigation course, but we will adapt the delivery for both kids and adults.
We would recommend a minimum age of 8. Younger kids are welcome to join for the fun, but we find that often they are not as interested in navigation just yet :)
No previous experience necessary
We will plan a walk based on your kids age and fitness so that not only you are learning new skills but you are seeing some of the best Peak District locations!
Dogs are welcome on our courses
